Accessible & Valid Design (no longer an oximoron)

Accessibility in web design has been a big issue of late. The era of your nextdoor neighbour’s kid throwing together a website for you on a trial version of Dreamweaver 4 is (thankfully) over. With a plethora of user setups and browsers, time and thought need to be placed into designing websites so that they appear consistently for all. This means that accessible and valid design is fast becoming the norm, not the exception. Proper use of heading and paragraphs, placing alt descriptions on images etc… all act towards improving the accessibility of your website and also help with SEO. A well structured and implemented website will be indexed by search engines better and therefore appear higher on ranking.

Behold… a Sitemap!

So you’ve got a well designed and accessible website with every page titled and just about every other conceivable angle covered. What’s that, your website doesn’t need a sitemap? Well, it does.

Good news though, Sitemaps are incredibly easy to create these days and come in two flavours. First off, an HTML Sitemap is one that users of your site can navigate to and be able to see the layout of your website (our current html sitemap). These can be as simple as a list of all the pages of your website, usually broken down into sections for ease of use. The second type of sitemap is based on XML (our current XML sitemap). This is a file that sits behind your website and acts to improve how search engines see it. A better indexed website is then more likely to appear higher on search engines.

If your website is built on software like Wordpress or Blogger you should have a sitemap generator built in which you simply have to activate. Otherwise you can use the likes of http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ to generate your xml. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

This London-based communications agency’s site is all about detail. There’s so much going on but it doesn’t struggle for your attention, instead letting you explore the nooks and crannies of this rather odd shop at your own pace.

The imagination of Tom Ewart (SHOP’s creative director) is realised by Canadian artist Gary Taxali (http://www.garytaxali.com/). Horny panting dog, sexy poodle, bizarre shopkeeper, a mouse that honks when you poke his tummy - weird enough for you?

All this is juxtaposed by the great work showcased from clients such as Mercedes, Adnams and Christian Aid, delivered with slideshows, audio and video.

Nick Haddow is a highly respected commercial photographer who works for clients and publications such as Vogue, French Connection and Victoria’s Secret.

The brief for the site was a simple, elegant series of portfolios which would keep the focus on the work. Nick also wanted to be able to manage the site himself so we delivered an easy to use portfolio content Management System so he could upload, caption and assign images to portfolios quickly.

Designed by Farrow, built by Underwaterpistol, this portfolio site for creative management agency Webber represents is a slick offering. The artists’ work looks great against the white space and the effect is all finsihed off with bespoke font and interesting colours. We also built a portfolio and project management system which enables Webber to manage their artists, send bespoke digital portfolios and maintain their website.

Webber are a leading photographic agency with offices in London and New York. They represent artists such as Blinkk, Valerie Phillips, Jeremy Murch, Tim Gutt, Jean-Francois Carly, Morten Laursen, Peter Rad, Warwick Saint and Greg White.

Robert Wyatt has been taking pictures commercially since 1995. He started his career as a gallery based photographer who drifted into taking fashion pictures by mistake. His first fashion pictures were for the Guardian weekend magazine and The independent Magazine in London. It was these shoots that brought him to the attention of Prada. He then shot two of the most memorable campaigns that Prada have ever produced. He regularly shoots for British Vogue, German Vogue, “10″ Magazine, i-D Magazine, GQ Style, Intersection, and has shot advertising campaigns for British Airways, Nintendo, Harvey Nichols, Prada, Valentino, Daks, River Island, Paul Smith, H+M and many more. He lives in London with his wife Lucy and their children.
